Excellent work discussing important themes from the movie Gattaca! You have all definitely focused on some important underlying messages in this fim. Thanks!
Compare and contrast Jerome (Jude Law) with Vincent (Ethan Hawke). How are they similar and how are they different? What does the movie want us to understand from seeing these two characters and their stories side by side? Think about the word "invalid," as well as the ending.
Lastly, what is the movie's overall message? How is it relevant to society? Is it relevant to society? Explain.
Good work!

Jerome and Vincent were too simliar people. They both had dreams. Vincent was willing to do anything for his dream. Jerome was willing to help Vincent accomplish his dreams. This movie wants us to see that anyone can do anything. The not so best people can do the same things as people who are better. Saying that people who are less are invalid in society, but that is not true. I believe the overall message is that anyone can do anything in life. In society this is very important. It tells people that you shouldn't give up on things if you aren't good at them.

Jerome and Vincent were similar in several ways, but the one that stuck out to me was the fact that they were both different. Jerome's legs were in training causing people to look down on him, and Vincent just didn't fit in at all. They both overcame people looking down at them though, they found ways around it, and they both led successful lives. I think this sends a message out to society saying that not only should we accept people for having differences, but also that we should see what makes each one of us different, and work to overcome it, and not let it hold us back from achieving our dreams.
Vincent and jerome are alot alike in the sence they would do anything to get what they want. They care so much about eachother and they were kind of like brothers. Almost like the brother vincent never thought he had. They are different because Jerome always looked at vincent as Jerome. Vincent always would have his mind telling him he is vincent and never could really be Jerome. Vincent wanted to stop what they were doing because he thought they would get caught, but jerome wouldnt let him. Jerome wanted to be successful at something because he knew thats the only thing he could accomplish. The story wants us to see that just because something isnt right or "invalid", You can make it happen and overcome or "conquer." It wants to show us that if you have something that is standing in your way for you to become who you want to become, change it. Make things happen and nothing is impossible. I think the overall message is trying to tell us never to give up and you can do anything. It's very relevant to society because their are obsticles all the time, but you just have to overcome them and move forward with your life. You cant give up and always wonder "what if?"

I think Jerome and Vincent are very simliar. Even if Vincent is too weak, Vincent and Jerome both have dreams. Vincent want to go space but he can't because he is too weak. And I think Jerome want to space too but he is disability. So Jerome help to Vincent to go space by giving his DNA. This is reason why I said both people are similiar. They can do anything to get their dream. And last part "invalid" means, the movie want to show us nothing is impossible for everyone. I think this is about society too. Now society, people can say easily you can't do taht because you are weak and sometime you are invaild with this because of something. But this movie want to show us everything is possible and nobody is invalid. So I think this movie is very impressive.
Gerome and Vincent both have problems. Gerome has a problem with his legs, and Vincent has a heart problem (blood problem this is why they call him an invalid) or maybe there is something wrong with his cells. At first Vincent was working as a janitor. Jerome is supposedly one of the best people on board. They both have almost the same color of eyes and hair. Vincent had to do something to his legs to make him taller than he usually was, so he could pretend to be Jerome. Vincent pretends to be Jerome, so he can go into space, and wont be rejected by the bosses so he can go into space. In the end Jerome gives Vincent a two years supply of specimins, so that he can go on vacation, and vincent goes into space. The meaning of this movie is that Vincent overcame his heart problem to do what he wanted to do, go into space. his brother killed a guy in the movie, and everyone thought it was Vincent (Jerome). His brother, tries to convince him not to go to space, but in the end he follows his dream, and is on the space shuttle.
Jerome and Vincent are similar in some ways but are different in many more. One way that they are similar is that they both want Vincent to succeed and fraud the system by pretending to be Jerome. Although they have more differences than similarities including that Jerome is actually supposed to be the valid person and Vincent is actually supposed to be the invalid one. I think that the movie wants us to understand that even though Jerome and Vincent weren't exactly supposed to be able to co-operate and fraud the system that you can still work with people that you aren't supposed to be able to. The word invalid to me is just a word as is evidence in the end when the doctor takes his urine sample and notices that he isn't who he says he is and still lets him go up into space. This movie's overall message I think is that if you work hard enough at something than you can achieve it. It is relevant to society in that it could help motivate certain people.

seeing vincent and jerome side by side was basicly had viewer looking at two people one who is "elite or perfect even with another who is suppose to be invaild, and with that the movie showed how both satements where very untrue they both had sevral flaws. the word invaild means to me not excepted and that what the people who were inside the elite cirlce thought about the people on the outside. they also looked down on those people like they were infearer to them. the movies overall messages is that people are always going to tell you what you can not do, but what are you gooing to do. that very vaild in the society esseacily if your listening.
Jerome and Vincent are similar in that they are both inefficient in some way. Jerome may have been created with the best genes, but it got him no further than any natural creation. I think the two men are different because of their attitudes about life. Vincent always believed in his dream, whereas Jerome had given his up after he was paralyzed. I believe the movie wants us to understand that no one is perfect. No matter how "invalid" we are, everyone is capable of attaining what they want in life if they just reach for it. I think Jerome couldn't get over the fact that he was no longer perfect. In the society he lived in, there is no point to life unless you are a complete work of perfection. I think the overall message of the movie is to accept who we are. Flaws are human nature and even science can not correct that.
gnJerome and Vincent both wanted to be the best at what they do. Jerome couldn't because of his accident, and Vincent couldn't because his genes weren't altered. The difference between them is Vincent had more determination than Jerome. I think that the movie shows the two characters stories side by side to show that everyone has choices to make, some of them good and some of them bad.
I think that the overall message is don't give up. It relevant to society because everyone goes through hard times in life, but things can get better if one tries to make the best of it.

Jerome and Vincent were two different people "merged" into one. They both needed each other to survive in life. Jerome later realized that he did need Vincent. Vincent needed Jerome's DNA to survive in the life he dreamed of. At the end I believe it is bittersweet. Vincent made his dream come true with the help of Jerome and Jerome couldn't "survive" without Vincent. They depended on each other. The movie Gattaca is teaching us in the end that you can accomplish anything that you give 100%. Just because you are "invalid" in a "valid" world doesn't mean that you are not as good as someone else.
First off, what a great movie! Jerome and Vincent were very much alike, but at the same time they were very much different. They both have a new purpose in life, and dream they want to achieve. Vincent went to the extreme to live his dream, while Jerome helped him do that. Both of the men had to overcome a very difficult time in their life. In today's society, people have to fit a certain requirement and need to fit the description. Not everyone is born with completely healthy bodies, but Vincent didn't let that stop him. Everyone is different in many ways and I believe if you have a dream or a goal and want to achieve it, you can if you put everything you have into it. I think the message we are supose to get from this movie is just that; working hard for something you want can and will be worth it.

Jerome and Ethan Hawke are supposed to be similar characters, but they aren't. Jerome is an invitro jerk and Ethan Hawke was an invalid "nice guy". They eventually grow on eachother and turn into the other person. Ethan Hawke ends up beating up cops and Jerome saves Ethan Hawke's butt. In the end Ethan Hawke gets lucky and Jerome takes the easy way out. The message is be yourself, but be yourself as others see you. It also tells us that identity fraud is a good thing to do, and advocates to reach your dreams. It may be relative to society in fifteen years when we have the technology to do what they can.

Jerome and Vincent were very similar. They cared about each other and they both had imaginations and dreams. Jerome helped vincent in any way possible to help him out with what he wanted to accomplish. They also both want vincent to succeed and they did this by doing anything possible for him to succeed by playing the system pretending Vincent was Jerome. I believe that the difference in them is that Vincent had a little more motivation than Jerome did. I believe the overall message is to never give up and always push to accomplish what you want.

I haven't seen the whole movie but what I did see is that Jerome and Vincent were a lot alike for the most part. They both wanted the same things in life. Movie made people see that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. At the end of the movie when he went through the last part on to the ship he was found invalid. I don't think that people can choose who is invalid. So keep trying because everyone is good enough.
Amber Conzemius
Jerome and Vincent were a like in many ways. They both had outstanding dreams. When Jerome couldn't accomplish his any longer, he wanted to help Vincent accomplish his. I think that once Jerome helped Vencent, he could die in peace. They both got their dreams in life and I believe that is the over all message. I believe the movie is trying to say that anyone can achieve anything in life, and if you put your mind to it, you can achive your goals.
Cory Van Pelt
Jerome and Vincent were simliar and different in ways. One had bigger dreams, leaving earth. One made track records and won medals. Jerome couldn'y do much after his accident and so that meant he had to help another to still live his life. With Vincent, this meant that he had to become another person and live the dreams he has had since he was a kid, going to space. At the end, he doesnt realize who the man was in the white coat the whole time. When the picture and message popped up saying invaild, it showed his real idenity and his father either program it to show up valid with Jerome, or something. But the movie discribes what ever the doctor diagnosed you with, you can still live your live with out the worrys and do the things you want to do.

I dont think that Jerome and Vincent were similar in any way. Vincent wanted to be everything that Jerome was, and Jerome I guess just wanted to help Vincent becasue he knew he had everything that Vincent needed. Even though at first things were really hard for Vincent, I'm glad that he never gave up, and managed to get through everything. Both Vincent, and Jerome helped eachother even though it might seem like Vincent was the only one that had a benefit from everything. The movie is mainly saying that everyone can accomplish their dreams no matter what.

I feel Jerome and Vincent are similar in that they are both stubborn, but in a good way. They set out on a mission to accomplish one ultimate goal, giving Vincent the opportunity to go into space. This was very sacrificial for Jerome, but I believe he was content with the success he had already acheived in life. He chose to give Vincent a chance to experience greatness. It is sad that these two characters had to go through the events they did just to acheive their goal. Their society is superficial, discriminitory, and it is unfortunate it led to Jerome taking his own life. The word "invalid" is played up in the movie and can have multiple meanings. It is used in Gattaca's computer system as identifying people that are valid and invalid to society, valid meaning elite, and invalid meaning normal. In the same sense, Vincent was considered invalid because he was posing as someone else. I loved this movie and it is definitly one that makes you think and analyze its themes.
--Candace Daiker--
Jerome and Vincent both had dreams of doing amazing things that could not be fulfilled because of their imperfections. Vincent was born with a heart defect and Jerome was paralyzed from the waist down. I think the difference between the two was that Vincent had more determination than Jerome. With Jerome's help, Vincent was able to overcome his imperfections. I think the underlying theme of this movie is depressing. Society is getting to a point where physically weak people are thrown aside and the people with the good genes are seen as better.
Andrea Harken
Jerome and Vincent share some similar qualities but also have some differences. They both have a goal. Vincent's goal is to work at gallica and leave the plantet while Jerome's goal is to help Vincent accomplish this. A difference they both had were their medical conditions. Vincent had a heart problem while Jerome was paralayzed from the waist down. Together, both these differences had helped eachother. Since Vincent could work because of hes heart problem, he used Jerome's DNA. Since Jerome was paralyzed and left for dead, Vincent buildt up Jeromes name as an ellite worker.
I think this movie is wanting us to understand that no matter how society labels us, and if you want something that badley, nothing can stop you. Having two different stories with two different people with different problems, the movie is wanting you to leave thinking that no matter who you are your goals can be accomplished.
--Caity Mills
Jerome and Vincent are similar the both are trying to accomplish dreams, and they are both willing to help each other to achieve their dreams. Neither of them is selfish both are willing to go out of their way to help other people. Both of them are willing to fight for what they believe, and they don not let people tell them what and what they can not do. They are different Jude Law was more confident than Ethan Hawk. When the police thought Ethan Hawk killed that guy, Ethan wanted to leave because he was scared, and Jude Law was confident and know they were not get caught. After that I think that it rubbed off on Ethan Hawk. With both of them standing side by side I think they want us to think with someone, you can do anything with a little help. The word invalid came up when the look at the name Vincent, but when they looked up Jerome it was valid I think that was saying they could not exist without each other. The overall message was fight for what you think is right, and that no matter what society is always going to doubt you.

Vincent and Jerome were both similar in the sense that they are both very motivated. They both seem to be constantly striving for exactly what they want to get out of life. Both have health issues. They are obviously different because Vincent is "invalid" and Jerome is "valid". I think thats interesting to think that they were producing these perfect humans, and all of them have the opprotunity to obtain some sort of problem physically as they grow up. Vincent had to fake being worthy of the space mission. He was faking this by taking DNA from someone who is obviously not capable of doing the mission himself. I thought that was neat how it almost seemed that two inadequate people made up one person who could do the job.
-Rebecca Peterson
Jerome and Vincent were different in that one of them was considered to be invalid although he was very smart and one was considered to be valid even though he was crippled. The titles contradict themselves. They both had dreams and goals they wanted to achieve. They were able to function as a team but not on thier own. Vincent could not go to space without Jerome, and Jerome would have been a loner without Vincent. The movie wants us to see that although their labels of "valid"or"invalid" were contradicting and that just because you carry a certain title, it doesn't hold you back.
Heather Haskins
Jerome and Vincent are similar in that they both need eachother to feel like life is worth living. Jerome can live precariously through Vincent, and Vincent needs Jerome's body so he can become a "valid." They are different in that Jerome has a negative outlook on life and continues to slide into depression, while Vincent is doing everything he can to achieve his goal.
The movie wants us to understand that you can't do everything on your own. And when you've been labeled "invalid", which is what we all are, you need other peoples help more than ever.
I think this movie's message is that though we are overcoming racial prejudice, we are degrading people for their genetical flaws. As a society we need to recognize these "flaws" and realize that we are all "invalids."

Jerome and Vicent were very different people yet very alike in many ways. They both craved to be the best at anything! However, one was the best and the other one couldnt be physically the best. But, eventually inperfection got to Jerome and he couldnt live with being second place and Vicent couldnt live with having a heart problem! I believe the movies main message was that you can do anything you put your mind to, however becareful for what you wish for. Vincent had to give up his identity! He was an invalid person. He gave up all his persona and everything up for his "dream". However, was it all worth it at the end. I dont believe so, how could anyone be happy living someone elses life and not theirs.~Sheyla
Jerome and Vincent are very similar people. From the part of the movie I watched I saw that they both had big dreams and wanted to reach them. Jerome didn't get to achieve his dream because he ended up in a wheel chair being an invalid. I say this movie as Jerome is living his life through Vincent, and Vincent is living his life through Jerome.
Alysen Sly
Jerome and Vincent are two very different people, but very much alike. Vincent will do anything in his power to acheive his dreams and goals in life. Jerome is willing to help Vincent acheive those goals and dreams. Vincent is also willing to help Jerome live his life successfully. I think the point of this movie is that you can do anything in life that you set your mind to and want bad enough.
-Bob Harsin
The way that these characters are woven together is masterful. Their differences are the first things that we encounter. Jerome was properly, genetically engineered and Vincent was the unfortunate recipient of natural conception. Because of this, Jerome was privileged, accepted and expected to succeed, whereas Vincent was demeaned, discouraged and expected to be an under achiever. They did however, have some similarities, most notable of which was the fact that they are both dreamers. Though when we meet Jerome he's already given up on his dream, Vincent has enough dream power left for both of them and interestingly enough when he (Vincent) does waver in his belief that he could realize his dream, it is Vincent that pushes him on the rest of the way. Apart from being dreamers, they also share a relentless and diligent disposition, this is shown powerfully in their commitment to the daily routine necessary to keep up their charade. In this they proved that while they were engaged in "invalid" behavior they are both very "valid". I think that the overall message that the movie is presenting is one of the power of a dream and the fact that no one has the right to deny any of us a chance at our dreams. Dreams are not just for the perfect, but they are for anyone who dares to have them and who's willing to perservere through the process.
