Documentation

Tremendous posts last week! Those of you who posted did excellent work!

On a different note: often, I hear stories of how students take information from the Internet or get friends to write their papers. This is, of course, disappointing.

In this space, please discuss why you think plagiarism is such a problem these days?

Why wasn't it as prevalent a few years ago? How can you avoid plagiarism? Why it is so important to avoid plagiarism?

Please discuss why you would personally never try to use other people's ideas as your own.

Thanks!

I think plagirism is such a problem these days is because there are so many things out there that you can copy. Information is so easy to find these days. A few years ago the internet was not as well know and wasn't used as much. Now every teenager is one the internet everyday. Plagirism is not a good thing to do it is a very serious issue.

I think plagiarism is become a big problem, because of the internet. It is becoming easy for people to just go online and get a paper. I think it is alway becoming a problem, because people don't know how to citie what they have used. Or if they do they citie it wrong. It is important to avoid plagiarism, because you ruin your name. People know that you stole something. You can get in big trouble for plagiarism, can get kicked out of school for it. That would make it hard to get accepted to other schools, or even get a job. I would not us plagiarism, because i do not want to loss my credibility. I want get good grades know that it was my work.

Plagarism is very a much an issue these days. One reason that I believe that it is constantly becoming a problem is because of our reliance on computers. We all use our computers everyday for one reason or another, but then there are many people who sneak a paper or two from the internet as well too. Using other people's ideas as your own is wrong, and I don't do it just because it's lazy and unfair. It's unfair to the people who produce these ideas originally and don't get credit for them.

I think that people need to write their own papers, because they need to express what they really mean, and not someone elses opinion. It could be offending to someone else if you steal their work. I think that plagerism was there a while back ago, but people wern't really punished for it. The instructers didn't know that the students had copied and pasted their whole papers. The teacher might have found out if students were using vocabulary that they didn't know, or were questioning their paper. Why take credit for someone elses hard work? Especailly if the person gets caught.

Plagiarism is a huge problem now days because of the internet. In the internet now days you can find mostly anything! Not only you can find anything you are looking for, but it is found withing seconds. From full written papers, to quotes. Everything can be found in the internet. This is the reason why it is such a huge problem in universities, and colleges. However, we can prevent plagiarism by citing every source you have. Or read the article you found, and put it into your own words.~Sheyla

I think plagiarism is is a very bad thing to do. When I was in high school I was very lazy and didnt sometimes understand what to write about, so I would look online. I now am an adult and know that it is wrong and would never do it. I think it had gotten worse because college students are always trying to find the easy way out, even if that means copying someones elses work or having your friend do it for you. I think when people get to college they get lazy and dont care about it if their parents are paying for it. I think they need to be more responsible and pay for it themselves so they will learn the meaning of hard work. I think we could avoid plagiarism by not letting people put essays and papers online. I also think it depends alot on the teacher and if they catch it. I would never use someone elses ideas as my own, because I actually want to do really good in school and dont want to do anything to mess it up. I want to succeed and you cant do that following someone else your whole life... Tasha Nagel

I think plagiarism has become more of a problem in the past couple of years because we have more information circulating on the internet, and this information is easier to get.

A way to avoid plagiarism is to gather information from multiple sites and then put these facts into your own words. It is important to avoid plagiarism because you aren't proving that you have learned anything.

I would never try to ues other people's ideas because I want readers to know what I am thinking. I also don't want to run the risk of getting kicked out of school.

Plagiarism is so common today because we don't know what it means to have to work hard for something. For every task a person has to do there is always a new and easier way to complete it. Why spend a week writing a paper when you can find one online or get a friend to write an authentic original for only 20 bucks. I personally don't want to waste my time cheating. I want my college education to mean something, and by having someone else do the work for me I gain nothing. Plagiarism is easiest for me to avoid as long as I don't have to do research paper. I don't try to copy things word for word, but my summarizing skills are minimal. So when doing a research paper, I copy less word for word if I have more to read from and summarize.

Plagiarism has become such a problem in society because everyone wants to be done now. More and more people want the easy way out and want someone else to do their work. This does not include just plagiarism, but also people’s jobs, and work around the house, ect. One main cause for this lack of effort is procrastination. People will put off their term paper until the end of the semester, and completely avoid it until a few nights before when they get on the internet and take somebody else's work, who in fact also let people take their work, making it easier for them to cheat. Plagiarism was not as know about several years ago, because there are now programs to help put an end to it, to help teachers find the essays online that they stole. People can avoid plagiarizing people by simply putting the information on the internet into their own words. It can also be avoided by not procrastinating your paper until the night before. Plagiarism is theft. I would not ever plagiarize personally because I would not want to get caught and receive an F for the assignment for a paper I should have passed.

I feel that plagirism is wrong in so many ways. Im sure it is very tempting to many people because the internet is such a huge info center, for ppl to steal ideas from and not even know you doing something wrong. Plagirism is so wrong i would never even think of doing it. People should remember if you give the person who wrote the info credit then your fine. Remeber to cite! Dont Copy!

Plagiarism is a problem these days because people are always in a hurry. I also think it’s more of a problem now because just about everyone has access to the internet, so it becomes easier to cheat. Another reason why people might plagiarize is because some people don't realize that they are doing it. I think students should be required to take a class or something to learn how to avoid plagiarism.
People can avoid plagiarism by trying to be original. They can also ask teachers if ones work might be consider as plagiarism.
It's important not to plagiarize because one, it's cheating and secondly, one could be punished by fines, or getting expelled.

I think it is such a big promblem because students just have so much work to do. We have a lot on our plate other classes, and some students have to work. I think it happens a lot these days because we have more to worry about more than other people had to in the past. Do not use someone eles ideas without giving that person credit. Whereever you get infromation from tell where you got it from. It is important to stay away from it because if you get caught you will fail the paper and maybe the class. I would never use other peoples ideas because it is wrong, and if i get caught I might get kicked out the class maybe even the school.

Plagirism is a problem because its so easy to access what you need of the internet. Google carries almost everything and with there database search its easy for anyone to go on to the search and use it to find what they need. It is important to stay away from plagirism because if you get caught it makes your look really bad and can get you dropped from the class. Also, no matter what you should never plagirise because it automatically gives you a sense of feeling guilty. It's unfair that the people who came up with these ideas do not get credit for what they did because there are people taking them of the internet and using them to get credit and good grades.

I think plagirism is in my words becoming a big problem these days, because you can go to so many things to get information from. Years ago when the internet wasent such a big thing it wasent such a problem. Plagirsm can get you in serious trouble.

I think that plagiarism is such a big problem these days because people don’t want to take the time to do their own work. They probably think that they could be doing something else, and not their homework. Since it’s so easy to get information from the internet people don’t even want to use their own imagination or their creativity. They think that teachers don’t notice, but sometimes it’s really obvious that the paper they turned in was just copied. It’s not good to use plagiarism because then nothing is being learned. I like being myself, and figuring things out on my own. Another thing is that it’s really not worth it because if a person does get caught, some really bad things could happen. It’s always just better to take the time, and try our best. It might not be the best essay, but at least I did it myself. That way the person can actually learns something. It’s also unfair for the person who actually came up with that paper, or that information to get no credit. Just remember it’s always better to be yourself.

I believe that plagiarism is more evident today then it was in past years because it is getting easier and easier to find information on what you are writing about either over the internet or through friends. You can avoid plagiarism by just doing your own work instead of copying someone else's work. It is important to avoid plagiarism because it is actually illegal in a way. No comment on the last question because I have plagiarized before but don't anymore.

First of all, I think it is really dumb to copy someone else's work. Do people really feel good about getting a grade for someone else's work? It is a bigger deal now because it si so easy and law suits are crazier than ever. I think it is important to use your own work, because you may find that you are a better writer than you think. Sometimes just to write what is in your head is the best stories or papers. If you copy other people's stuff there is no sense of ownership for anything you do. If you are copying another person's papers or information, you are more likely to cheat in almost everything you do in life.

I think people have different reasons for plagirism. Some people work 40 or more hours a week, have a family, don't have to recourses at home, or are just lazy. I don't believe it's fair for people to plagirize and still get a passing grade. You should get a grade for your own work, not for someone else's. It is so easy these days that anyone can do it.

The problem with plagirism, is that people dont copy right what they write. They just post it on the internet and other people read it and say "I will include that in my paper" and the teachers or other people can't find it cause the interent is so big theses days. A way to prevent this is copyrighting and also eliminating copy and paste on web-sites. A reason why I wouldn't plagiarism, is because I could be kicked out of school and it would go on my recored.

Baseball players cheat! Once hailed as one of the greatest female athletes of all time, former olympic track sensation Marion Jones is currently serving a jail sentence for using steroids and lying under oath about it! The Enron scandal exposed the cheating ways of the companys'Executives and even "wholesome" Martha Stewart. With so many of our "heroes" and "respected people" being caught cheating, it's easy to see why "plagarism" a form of cheating, is such a problem these days. Add to that the information readily available on the internet and its no wonder people don't see the need of writing their own papers and why plagarism is more prevalent thatn it was a few years ago. I avoid plagarism by making sure that after I've read something, I craft my own way of recounting what the author said. Avvoiding plagarism is important because I think that ultimately you are cheating yourself and as we can learn from the many disgraced athletes, you will be found out, often when you least expect and can least afford to be negatively exposed. Plagarism is something that I would never personally do because I think that my ideas are good and just as important as other peoples and I'm not a cheater, because I truly believe that cheaters really cheat themselves.

Plagiarism is a big problem these days due to the internet. You can even buy your own paper online if you can fork out the cash and that guilty conscience. I think if you give credit to the proper writer on a works cited page you can avoid plagiarism. It is a big deal and has huge consequences. It is easy to avoid if you yourself write your own paper and use quotations whenever you input someone else's thoughts into your own paper.

I believe there are a few reason for the rise in plagirsing in general and the growing of the trend. The Main reason for this problem is because of the advancemnet of technology. It is much easier for someone to get their hands on someone elses words and think no one is going to find out. But technogly also works against plagirism because it can help find the materials that were copied. I would never Take credit for someone else's work because i have enough faith and confidence in myself that I can write Just fine using my own words.

Plagiarism is a problem today because the Internet makes it very easy to find information from a variety of source. You can use search engines to find written information about any topic you want. It is tempting to use this information, word for word, because often it is difficult to think of a better, or original way to say it. It also seems like you could get by with it easier because, unlike in the past when everyone had access to only a few books on a topic from your local library, there are often thousands of related topics to pick from making it harder for the writer to be caught unless the reader happened to read the same thing. That is why I wouldn’t copy someone’s work—I would get caught. Chances are if I were tempted to do that it would be because I didn’t understand the topic and then when asked to explain what I meant, I would be busted.

Although I, personally, do not believe in plagiarism, it would be very easy to take advantage of it. Before the internet and even web access from our cell phones, we only had options like encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines, etc. We can attempt to get away with so much more now with our technology. Even though colleges, especially universities, are cracking down, I think a lot of students still plagiarize. You can avoid plagiarism by citing any information you obtain from whatever source you get it from, giving the actual author credit. It is very important to avoid plagiarism because it is dishonest to yourself and your peers. I wouldn't feel content with my work knowing it was someone else's. I want to get my ideas out there rather than repeating things that have already been said.

I think plagiarism is definitely more of a problem today because of the interent. It is so easy for students just to cut and paste items they have found on a web site and take credit for it. Students are even taught in school how to use the computer to cut and paste. Most students don't take paper and pencil notes anymore but they use via computer. Back then internet wasn't as easy to access as it is today and because students wrote things they summerized more. When you take someones ideas you are really stealing if you don't give them credit first. I would never try to use another person's exact words just for the fact of knowing that they werent mine to begin with.
