Shaping Spaces

Thank you all very much for your posts concerning the Lion King! The insight and reasoning in some of those posts were very, very strong. Nicely done!

This week we will be discussing how to analyze spaces.

Think of a space that might be particularly interesting to analyze. Describe it. Describe who uses this space. How does the design of the room affect the way it is used? Does it affect the way it is used? Does the space shape the people or do the people shape the space? Do not duplicate other people's answers. Explain your answers fully.

We will discuss these in class.

Thanks!

The space I am going to analyze is "Under One Woof". It is a place for owners to bring their dog to doggy-daycare and or to get their dog/cat groomed. The way this space was designed was around dogs. It has a concrete floor (incase of accidents), 1/2 walls around the doggy-daycare area so that the dogs can see who is coming in. I would say that the people shape the space. It has a display upfront with numerous items to purchase for your beloved pet including beds, bowls, leashes, knick-knacks, and dog treats just to name a few. The grooming area is designed for the groomers, having the tables at the correct height for each groomer and the size of dog. The bathing room is seperate area for the bather to bathe the dog and that way they have room to blow out the dog without getting hair all over the grooming room or the front area.

The house that I live in is very interesting. It was built in the 1800s by my family. It is very old, but we have fixed it up allot since my family moved in. The things that still remain that tell you that the house is old is the beautiful woodwork, an old fashioned chair with reclining sides that i thought i had broke one time when the side came down when we moved it to a different area of the house. It is very victorian looking. Sometimes I am reminded of my grandpa, because of the handicap entrance deck on the front of the house, or the red cuckoo clock that he got in germany when he was in the military that hangs in the room that my mom painted red. it was the same room my grandpa was born in. The cemetary he was buryed in is just down the road. The house is two stories with a basement that has a pool table. It has six bedrooms, and is on the Saint Anthony blacktop. The reason my family moved here to Iowa is that we wanted to keep the house in the family because my grandpa was dying.
I would say that the people shape this space, because we redecorated the whole house, and made improvements on how we wanted it to be, so we could relax and be ourselves here. then the space could shape the people because it is very quiet out here and relaxing. You can hear the car coming from a couple miles away, and the gardens in the summer are beautiful.

Well, since I just got back from Las Vegas I will use that. I have been there one other time with my boyfriend and dad. The first time I went there I didnt really care for it because I dont like gambling and anywhere you want to go it costs a fortune. Unless you wanted to walk which when im on vacation I dont like to. We went to eat and watch sports which was cool, but other then that I didnt like how the people acted. When I went back the second time with my friends, I had a whole different perspective on it. I saw Vegas in a different way. The night life and so much more. I think Vegas has very nice buildings, and clubs. Other then that I think its run down. I think it's trashy how they give you all those cards when you walking of naked women. The night clubs are amazing, but you can never bring a guy because he will never get in. They only let girls in and then guys can only get in if they have alot of money. I think the people shape the space alot. I think that has alot to do with how vegas runs. Then again the space kind of shapes the people. If Vegas was not known for partying then I dont think people would go. The design of Vegas is amazing, but a little overwhelming. I feel the architecture is awesome, the shops are great, and food is great. I think the way it is set up and how long it takes to get from one end to the other is horrible. Tasha

The space that I’m going to analyze is the academic library of dmacc. I spend a lot of time in there mainly because it’s a place where I can get a lot of work done, and at the same time I can relax. I don’t really like noisy places so, maybe that’s one of the reasons why I go there. I’m usually there in the morning when there are only a few people, and the only thing I can smell are the different perfumes that people are wearing. It’s very quiet in the morning, so the only thing I can hear are the pages of books turning. That doesn’t bother me because they sound calm and peaceful. Then later in the day if I go in the library again there are usually more people and the atmosphere changes a lot. Now I can sense all the imagination that’s going on, and also all the knowledge that the various books are providing. I think that the library shapes the people because once you walk through the doors you are expected to be at your best behavior. Of course people can talk, but they usually have to whisper so that the other people don’t get distracted or annoyed. The academic library isn’t very modern, but it still has everything I need. The rows of bookcases are filled with books that are neatly arranged, and then there are also movies, audios, cassettes, and DVD’s. Those are on a different row because the library is kept very organized. Another cool thing is that everyone is always welcome in the library.

The space I am going to analyze is Walmart. When you first see Walmart you see a big building with red, white, and blue colors. It is usually loud, and packed with people. The ceilings are high. The walls are usually white. There are some walmart that have food places inside of them, so it smells like food. Walmart has cheap price to attract all sorts of people. They have a wide variety of things so that helps to bring in different people. I would say that Walmart is shaping the people. There prices are so cheap that is what is attracting people.

The space I am going to analyze is "United Center". United center is Chicago Bulls home stadium in Chicago. I using this space because I went to Chicago during the spring break and I was impressed by this stadium. If you go this stadium first, you can see Michael Jordan statue at outside of stadium. And the Stadium color is white and preety big. And if you go inside of stadium, you can see many people and shops. Some people watching some event, and some people buying some stuff. And than, if you go to the basket court, you can see many seats, people, and screen. The court color is yellow and seat color is brown.

My room is like most teenagers bedrooms. I have a tv on my dresser that i will use almost everyday. My bed is right next to the window and i always find myself waking up to the schoolbus picking up the kids right outside my room. My stereo is above my computer that sits in one of the corners of my room. There are hundreds of penthouse pictures that cover my whole wall like a collage. The collage lightens up the room and everytime i wake up in the morning i start my day off feeling great. My room is messy and there are clothes scattered everywhere. My room isn't the cleanest smelling but i have managed to live in it for the past year. It's a area i go when i want to get away from people and spend time by myself. I enjoy locking my door so noone can enter so i can spend time by myself.

Well, im going to analyze the comp 1 classroom at Dmacc. The space has four walls with a door way and one set of windows. The room is surrounded by desks, computers, and chairs for classmates to sit. The room has a couple pictures hanging. The rooms is used for teachers to teach and student to teach and the students to learn. There isnt affect unless the students are in. The people shape the space. It has more of a warm feeling.

I intend to analyze the Ericson Public Library space for my paper. I work at the library and am very familiar with the different areas and activities that make up this environment. The building, by use and design, impacts the people who use it in a big way. It is a library. It is a public space, but a space that has “rules” attached to it that are both posted and implied. People who come in talk in quieter tones so that they don’t disturb others; many people come in alone to use the resources and don’t interact with others; many come in and use it as a social gathering spot that offers a comfortable place to be. The library is also a space that sees so many different types of people. All ages and types of people use the building at the same time—together but separate.

The people who use the library also shape the feel of the building. The physical surroundings are functional. Books and computers are logically placed and ordered. The patrons bring life to the library. Parents who are there with their children bring with them their family dynamics. Adolescents bring with them their energy—many of them practice shaping their “image” for their friends to see. Older patrons find opportunities to visit with others or engage library staff in conversation or an occasional “walk by” game of chess. Some people use the library as a place to be with others, but still be alone. The physical aspects of the building offer the skeleton but the people create the body.

One space that might be interesting to analyze is Cinemark Movies 12. The outside view of the building kind of looks like a box. As one enters inside, a person will find the concession stands. Look to the right there is an arcade room. I find it a little odd that a movie theater would have a gaming room. I see that it's dark in there with few people actually playing games. I haven't heard of anyone saying, lets go to Cinemark Movie 12 to play games. To the right of the concession stand is the line where one gives the ticket to the worker, and that person states what direction to go to view one's selected movie. No matter which direction one takes, the hallway that leads to the different movie room is long and dark. The movie rooms themselves are dark with rows of chairs, which reminds me of an ocean wave because of the way the chair were arranged. Near the line where the person collects the tickets is another line near it that leads to the restrooms and the exit doors. I find it strange that near the restrooms is like a different space of its own because there is always people there standing and chatting with each other. The primary use of this building is to watch movies and purchase refreshments; however, it seems like they wanted this building to be a hangout place for kids and teens. I think that the space shapes the people for the most part because of all the lines people are suppose to use. On the other hand, people have shaped the space by creating an area to chat near the restrooms.

The livingroom in my house is a very relaxing place. There is a 52' tv in there that we all love to watch, it is in the cubby hole that we built into the wall. The walls are oatmeal and maroon they are very relaxing colors that match our maroon couch, loveseat, and lazyboy. In my opinion the space affects the people becasue when ever anyone comes into the livingroom they all just sit down on the couch and they kick back and relax and we all just talk about anything.

The space i am going to analyze is the timber behind my house. when you first see it, it looks like just alot of trees which there are alot of trees but there is so much more that make it a timber. It is usually pretty quiet but there is the usual bird cherp and the squirl noises. The timber is like a breath of fresh air. It is so peaceful you are the only one out there. You get to see all the wildlife in the woods.

The space I am going to analyze is the laundry mat. I have never been to an actual laundry mat building, but I can picture what it would be like. There will be a variety of people there, from college students to old people. This is a boring space, not a whole lot to do or look at. People are socializing, people that would probably never talk outside the laundry mat. I belive both, the people shape this place, and the place shape the people.

The space i analyzed was the outback steakhouse! As soon as you step out of your car. You immediately smell the mouth watering aroma of the amazing of the outback! It just makes your stomach sizzle at the smell and thought about eating very delicious food! Then as you walk into this amazing resturant you find yourself feeling very exclusive because of the delicate lighting. Everything about it just feels great, the outstanding service to the seating arrangments! People also shape this great resturant because of how they all looked so pleased and excited to eat at the outback. From their amazing blooming onion dish, to the breathtaking steak! :)~Sheyla

Churches are places that I always think are very interesting. The Methodist church in Ogden is no exception to me. There is a large cross in the very front behind where the pastor always stands. This directs attention to the front of the church. All of the pews are situated in a way that everyone is comfortably facing the cross and the pastor. The ultimate feel of the building is contemporary and very reverant. I think it really does do the job that it was built for, a place for worship.

The space that I am going to analyze is the DMACC gym. I spend a lot of my time here practcing for dance team and performing during half time games. The first thing I alway notice when I walk in is that distinct smell of freshy waxed floors and sweat. A smell only found in a gym. The hardwood floors are alway glistening and looking as if they were just polished with different color strips taped going every which way. Dmacc must value this place because the janiters take such good care of it. There is usually two baskets hanging ready for play, while two more baskets in separate corners still waiting to be lowered. Even if there is no one there it always looks like its ready for the next acitivty.
